25-year old El-Wardany has been working as Bloomberg's correspondent in Khartoum for the past year and was covering the student-led protests that have been taking place in the Sudanese capital for the past five days. 

The arrests came as part of the Sudanese authorities' crackdown on newspapers and journalists. AFP reporter Simon Martelli was detained for twelve hours before he was released on Wednesday, June 20th, while according to Sudan Tribune "At least three papers have had their copies confiscated this week with some of them being ordered to bring their draft editions to security authorities for screening before publication."

El-Wardany had posted "Sudan security raids al-Watan newspaper HQ to detain Editor-in-chief last night, the paper was confiscated on Monday #Sudanrevolts " on her account on Twitter hours before her arrest.
