SKN in Emden (Germany) Has Inserted Some 150 Million Products in Two Years

02.03.2015 - Two years after SKN Druck u. Verlag GmbH & Co. KG in Emden (Germany) commissioned the first FlexLiner worldwide, the meter of the inserting system from Muller Martini is already showing 150 million copies. “That has exceeded our expectations,” says Christian Basse, publisher and sole shareholder of the company, which specializes in inserts in inserts.

A little over two years ago, SKN became the first company worldwide to commission the FlexLiner, since the inserting system, which was then brought to the market by Muller Martini, lends itself to inserts in inserts. “We need technology that enables products without a low folio lap to be opened using suction technology,” says Basse.

Basse was not only impressed by the new technology of the FlexLiner, which promotes innovative insert marking and can be extended as desired thanks to its modular design, but also by its high production speed. “There was of course a certain learning curve at the start, but today we regularly produce at an average net output of 27,000 per hour, and even achieve a maximum speed of 30,000 cycles for relatively simple products with large run sizes. That has resulted in a total of 150 million inserts in two years, exceeding our expectations. The FlexLiner not only produces quickly, but has also proven itself over time to be a heavy-duty machine, and still performs just as well as at the time of its commissioning.”

Inserts in Inserts – and in Newspapers
Basse attributes the fact that the FlexLiner, which features two insert feeders and stream feeders for the automatic feeding of products, has such a high performance to the partnership between SKN and Muller Martini. “The machine manufacturer made some modifications tailored to our production structure in conjunction with us, in particular to the pockets, thereby increasing our net output.”

In addition to inserts in inserts, a premium form of advertising that is increasingly popular in Germany because it is significantly more eye-catching than traditional advertising, SKN also places inserts into newspapers using the suction technique. “As soon as we have newspaper runs of over 100,000 copies, we turn to the FlexLiner,” says Basse.

In 2014, SKN, which publishes two regional daily newspapers and an advertising journal and has its own publications and telephone book publishing company, inserted some 130 million products with a printing volume of over 25,000 tons. The company employs 450 people at four sites.
