As part of a day of global action on 3 May to protest the on-going deterioration of freedom of expression in Turkey, WAN-IFRA joined IFEX, the global network comprising 108 organisations dedicated to promoting and defending freedom of expression, to raise a collective voice to the attention of Turkish diplomatic missions worldwide.

Pressures on journalists and media organisations are designed to reduce transparency and accountability in society. Usually it means powerful interests have something to hide from public view. Ultimately, media need to do more to convince public opinion that such targeting is an attack on common values and will not be tolerated.

WAN-IFRA has joined international media and human rights organisations in condemning on-going attacks on journalists in Bahrain. On 23 April, the court of appeals will hold another hearing for Sayed Ahmed Salman al-Mousawi, an internationally-renowned photographer, who was arrested more than three years ago for alleged terrorist activities.

WAN-IFRA joined with African and international free expression organisations to urge the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) to demand the release of Gambian journalist Alhagie Abdoulie Ceesay, detained in violation of a 2014 ACHPR ruling that condemns imprisonment for defamation.

WAN-IFRA and global freedom of expression organisations have written to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to free cartoonist Atena Faraghdani who is in prison for publishing a symbolic cartoon online. Atena has been sentenced to 12 years 9 months in prison, awaiting final verdict from the court of appeal.
