Somali media women attending the WAN-IFRA Women in News (WIN) capacity building programme in Nairobi, Kenya have been challenged to learn to tell impactful stories. Winding up the training for the media women, lead trainer, Paula Fray, told the journalists that it was not enough to have more women in senior positions in media houses. The women should begin to explore the potential of telling impactful stories in order to make a difference.

WAN-IFRA’s successful Media Freedom and Democracy Programme got some good news this month – the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will support the program for three more years, with a NOK 9,000,000 (EUR 1,000,000) investment in Media Freedom activities in Central East Africa and South East Asia.

In 2016, WAN-IFRA combined its Sida-funded Women in News Africa programme with its Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs-funded programme to bring participants together for combined workshops in media management as well as peer mentoring, and networking events. The group of 45 high potential editors and journalists from Botswana, Rwanda, Zambia and Zimbabwe (Sida-sponsored delegates) and Kenya, Malawi and Tanzania (Norwegian-sponsored delegates) met on two occasions throughout 2016.
